The Smart Export Guarantee launched on the 1st of January 2020 is a government-backed initiative it requires certain electricity suppliers (SEG Licensees) to pay “small-scale generators” for low-carbon energy they export back to the grid.
If you have solar panels you are a small-scale generator however these installations must be in the UK and meet the eligibility criteria
How does the scheme work?
SEG Licensees (the electricity company) determine the terms of your contract such as the rate and length. The SEG Generators (you) will receive payments depending on the agreed rate and amount exported. SEG payments are calculated using export meter readings
We recommend that you look around for different licensees to find the best rate, your electricity provider and licensee don’t have to be the same. To apply for a SEG tariff you will need to follow their specific application process.
